2016

The Concept
In Spring 2016, the show was focused around words that define you– ones assigned to you by society and by yourself, specifically the phrases "I am more than..." and "I am...". Because of importance of those phrases within the piece, and to create a direct connection between the marketing and the performance, it made sense to base the promotional images around the idea of the "I am..." phrase.
For the individual portraits (see more below), each woman chose her own phrase. The phrases were combined with one of three background textures created through digital manipulation of existing photographs and then projected onto the subject. Part of the process in developing the concept for these photos was the significance of the projected text vs. the digitally inserted text of the group photo. Beyond the aesthetic effect of the projection, there is a symbolic element in projecting words onto a subject. The only guideline for the phrases was regarding length. Each woman was responisble for the weight of her words– whether it was a phrase she believed about herself, wanted people to believe about her, or simply wanted to share. The significance of the word or phrase then informed the pose and expression in each photograph in an attempt to create strong content with a personal, relatable connection. The individual portraits were used as profile pictures on social media to promote the show and compiled into a composite image for a larger poster
